On September 25th, Jess and I welcomed our new baby boy, Nolan Willet Maguire into the world. Having had a couple of weeks to really process and absorb this monumental event, I wanted to blog a bit about it.
Prior to Nolan being born, the overwhelming quote from everyone was “Wait until you see how much everything changes.” I could cognitively process the lack of sleep, the paradigm shift when it comes to no longer being the most important person in your life, etc. What really has been the most monumental change is the reality of how much influence we, as Nolan’s parents can have on the impact of his life as a healthy and functioning child and adult as he grows up.
To that light we have started building the foundation. We have begun reading to him before his early evening nap. We have really taken the time to be patient and happy as much as possible around him, knowing even this early, that we are forming the person that he will become.
The other monumental change was been the amazing joy and love that my wife has for our son. It is as if she was made for this. Watching her patience and ability to softly talk to him as he is wailing because he’s hungry or needs a diaper change has really changed my perspective on my wife. She is truly the most amazing and toughest person I have ever met. As a former football coach, I thought I had seen a lot of tough people in my life. NOT EVEN CLOSE! Any woman who gives birth is far away among the toughest people on earth. My wife falls soundly into that category.
As Nolan continues to grow, one of the key goals that Jess and I have set for our us is “Family first.” No matter what, Family first.
They are the people that will always be there for you.
